1. Maintain a healthy weight. Check with your doctor, and find your optimal weight. Start a nutrition and exercise program that allows you to maintain your weight. 
2. Eat healthy. Concentrate on developing a steady eating regiment, and control portion size. Increase the number of good foods, such as fruits and vegetables, while cutting out snacks and sweets.
3. Reduce your salt and sodium intake. Processed foods are automatically higher in sodium. Try and eat fresh, healthy foods whenever possible, and avoid putting extra salt on foods.
4. Increase your physical activity. Start slowly – even 20 minutes per day can do wonders for your health. Consider joining a class or health club that will get you out of the house, and interacting with other seniors.
5. Take all medications as directed. Talk with your pharmacist to better understand your medication and how it interacts with other medicines, especially over the counter drugs.
6. Monitor your own blood pressure regularly. Get an in-home monitoring system that will allow you to take your own blood pressure at different times of the day, and after different activities.
7. Establish regular visits with your doctor. Keep him or her aware of your blood pressure numbers, and any changes you might have in your health.
