Helping Colorado Seniors See Better – Cataracts Awareness Month

Posted on August 3rd, 2009.

Did you know cataracts is one of the most curable causes of vision loss?

August is Cataracts Awareness Month. Currently, around 20.5 million Americans age 40 and over have cataracts, and 1 in 2 will develop cataracts by the age of 80. eye chart

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s clear lens. When the clouding occurs, it prevents the passage of light needed for vision, causing a person to have varying levels of vision loss. Cataracts are a significant cause of blindness in some parts of the world. However, here in the United States, technological advances have given us new procedures that allow us to remove cataracts, improving vision.

Cataract surgery is the most frequently preformed surgical procedure, and gain be performed on an outpatient basis. Using local anesthesia, the eye surgeon makes a tiny incision through which he or she removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with a permanent artificial lens.

Currently there are no exercises or medications that will prevent cataracts from forming or reappearing. Surgery is the only option for removal once you have confirmed they are in place. If you are having vision problems, the best place to start is with your doctor. Through a simple test, he or she will be able to tell if you have cataracts, and give you your options.

[Sometimes its easy to miss the little things if you are caregiving for your senior relative on a part time basis.
