May is Older Americans Month
Each year the Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Aging establishes May as its Older Americans Month, and sets the theme to raise
awareness and assist service providers in the area of aging. This year the theme is “Living Today for a Better Tomorrow” and reflects the desire to focus on prevention efforts and programs that help older adults live better lives as they age.
By 2030, one in five Americans will be age 65 or older. Although the risk for disease increases with older age, poor health is not inevitable. There are ways to take care of yourself now at a younger age, to ensure good health as you grow older.
1. Eat healthy. Establishing healthy eating patterns early can help you not only lose and maintain your weight, but also reduce the risk factors of certain diseases.
2. Exercise. Even simple things like a nightly walk or bike ride can help your body stay in shape. Regular exercise can also reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, help reduce arthritis, and control muscle and joint pain.
3. Challenge your mind. Make a commitment to try new things. Sign up for a weekly painting class. Explore a new business opportunity. Try out a yoga class.
