Medical Alarm Button – The Choice For Active Seniors
Today’s seniors live active, interesting lives. They don’t want an accident or injury to slow them down. That’s why—along with health and auto insurance—they invest in “fall insurance”: a medical alarm button that brings help quickly if they can’t get to a telephone.
These wireless, high tech systems are one of the great tools available for added safety and protection in the home. Lightweight and waterproof, medical alarm buttons enable wearers to summon emergency assistance from anywhere in their home or yard.
Following are common questions which people often have as they begin researching this technology:
Will a personal medical alarm somehow limit my independence?
No. Wearing a wrist button or pendant alarm around the house or yard in no way interferes with your independence. Instead, the button insures you’ll be able to receive immediate medical help in case of a fall or accident. A delay of minutes or hours in getting medical attention increases the risk of aggravating an injury. Speedy medical help cannot only reduce the severity of an injury, it can also help insure you’ll be able to return home to independent living.
What if I want help but don’t need an ambulance?
Medical alarm systems are monitored 24 hrs/day. When you press the alarm button, a live operator will come on line to speak to you before ANY assistance is sent. If you need assistance but not an ambulance, simply tell the operator who you would like her to contact. This could be your son, daughter, neighbor, or friend. The operator will have your personal list of names and contact numbers when she speaks with you–names you provided when you received your button.
What if I am not able to respond or I am out of audio range?
The operator who responds to your alarm is professionally trained in two-way medical response calls. They will make three attempts to speak with you, and if there is no response will dispatch 911 personnel. They will then contact one of the family members or friends on your personal contact list, to notify them that 911 has been called.
What if the button is pushed accidentally, and I don’t need any help?
A medical alarm system is equipped with a “cancel” button, which you can push if you’ve accidentally triggered the alarm. If you are unable to do so before the operator comes online, simply let her know that it is a false alarm. There’s no charge or penalty if this happens.
Will the service work away from home . . . say, at a restaurant or grocery store?
No. When your alarm button is pushed, it sends a wireless signal to your home telephone line. This signal automatically dials an emergency call center operator. If your button is “out of range”, the signal won’t reach your home telephone line. However, when you are out in public there are usually other people nearby who can summon assistance if needed.
If I never have to utilize the service isn’t it a waste of money?
As with health and auto insurance, a personal medical alarm will hopefully never need to be used. But most wearers of an alarm button—and their families–report that the peace of mind and confidence they experience is well worth the investment.
Is an alarm button expensive?
The cost of 24/hr monitoring and immediate access to medical help if needed is only about $1.00 a day. In instances when the alarm is needed and used, the investment seems very small compared to the benefit received.

I appreciate your comment and apt comparison between Medical Alert Systems, and Car Insurance. My parents use medical alarm and although gratefully they have not had to utilize the service, and pride tells them they do not need Medical Alert Service. Next time I talk to them I will share the story of Car Insurance.
Thank you for the valuable information,
