A Daily Dose Of Potassium Can Help You Live Better

Posted on February 2nd, 2009.

For most adults, the daily milk intake of sodium far exceeds the recommended daily allowance of 2,300 milligrams per day, or approximately 1 teaspoon of table salt. But according to a new study published in the January 2009 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, adults that consume 4.7 grams of potassium per day can reduce the effects of daily salt intakes, and lower blood pressure.

With high blood pressure effecting nearly one in three Americans, it is one of the top concerns as we start to age. Most people understand that too much sodium in their daily diet can increase their blood pressure, but few are aware that potassium can help reduce the effects.

Great potassium sources include fruits, vegetables, fish and some dairy products. Foods that are especially rich in potassium include bananas, orange juice, tomato sauce, sweet potatoes, lima beans, tuna, fat free milk and yogurt.
